Enid, OK: Market Report for November 29, 2005

Anticipation is an interesting thing, for some folks it’s excitement, for others it’s worry. Anticipating rain though, is quite another matter! It would sure be nice to be a weatherman, because it doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong, you still have a job. We’ve all been hoping for a rain for the last month or two and it just hasn’t come. We started off pretty good here in Enid, but all the moisture we’ve had has either been freeze dried or blow dried!

The futures market sure seems to be anticipating some good times ahead! Several contracts setting record highs even now. The yearling market is fantastic, if you can find the yearlings! Calves are still selling very well, considering. There seems to be a lot of places that are stocking wheat at ½ to 2/3 of normal. It’s definitely not as muddy as last year, but a little mud wouldn’t hurt!

We had a nice run of cattle here this week. Bred heifers bringing from $950.00 to $1250.00, younger bred cows selling up to $1260.00, with older cows bringing up to $800.00. Butcher cows and bulls about steady, $37.00 to $48.00 with a few bringing up to $55.00. Light weight calves still in good demand, up to $150.00, with stocker weights up to $120.00. Yearlings very hard to find, with seven weights up to $117.00.

Enid, OK: Market Report for Nov. 8, 2005

The market is still great! Stockers and feeders are still in high demand, and the prices are reflecting that. Butcher cattle have hit a slump, but that will end when the dairy buy out is over. We all need to remember how good things actually are! How many of us have sold 800 lb steers for $65.00 in the last 10 years? It’s sure nice to be able to sell a calf off the cow for $600.00 or more!

The big wigs keep pushing for animal id, age verification, source verification and all the other hog wash for the sake of the Japanese market. WHY? We have the highest cattle prices in the history of record keeping without the Japanese in the market! It would be nice to have their business, but why should we conform to their rules? The United States of America is usually the one establishing the rules! If they would like to buy our beef, then great, otherwise we have a great market without them.

At one time, Japan was the biggest importer of U.S. beef, but all they imported was less than 5% of our total production! So what’s more important, the 95% that’s making everybody money, or the 5% that isn’t even in the market? Think about it!

Take your cattle to the auction! Excitement, enthusiasm, friends, food, and great prices – what more could you ask for? We are in a time of low supply and high demand, which makes an excellent market for you! Come enjoy selling a calf for $140.00 a pound!
Great calf market still! Light weights bringing up to $160.00, with four and five weight steers selling up to $140.00. Heavy calves selling from $110.00 to $125.00. Yearling heifers bringing $105.00 to $115.00, with yearling steers bringing up to $120.00. Butcher cows look lower, from $35.00 to $47.00, with a few up to $53.00. Bulls from $57.00 to $61.00. Bred cows up to $1350.00.

Enid, OK: Market Report for October 25, 2005

Its calf time in America! Lots of calves being moved right now, with the vets busy preg checking cows and cowboys busy processing calves. One thing that really isn’t busy right now is the yearling market. The true yearlings seem to be harder to find than a needle in a haystack, but they are worth a whole lot more!

As high as the calves seem right now, they also seem to have a chance to make a profit. The biggest issue might be where a person buys their calves. You can buy them out of Nebraska or Montana for $750.00 a head or you can buy them out of the southeast for $550.00 a head. The last time I checked, a yearling steer might be worth par the board wherever he came from. Looks to me like $200.00 a head profit right up front is worth a lot more than looking at a pretty one!

Even with all the talk about genetics, alliances, animal id, source verification, and all that jazz, how can anybody justify giving $300.00 or more for a black cow versus a red or off colored cow? Especially when they are bred to the same bulls! The calves will bring the same money whether their mothers were red, white or blue! It’s one thing to say a man’s cows are all black, but it’s quite another thing to say he made a profit and not a loss!

This might be an excellent year for people to harvest their wheat with cattle instead of combines! The price of fuel is horrendous, as is the price of about every other input in agriculture. By putting cattle out on wheat, at least a person has a chance of getting two or three paychecks for his acreage, rather than just one. Think about it, one tank of diesel fuel costs the same as one big calf, but how many tractors can you run on a quarter of wheat?

Overall market is still excellent! Calves bringing up to $150.00, with weaned calves higher, and yearlings still bringing $100.00 to $120.00. The butcher cow market has taken a pretty good hickey with the dairy buy out, but that will end someday. The overall beef cow numbers are still very low, so possession is still the key!

Winter Livestock has a great many opportunities to help you with your cattle needs! If you need cattle to turn out, or to take in, we can help. We also have excellent facilities and people to process, sort or feed your cattle. Not to mention the internet capabilities that we have and our four state coverage in auctions! Call to see how we can help you! We’re looking to work for you! Call any of our locations, or visit www.winterlivestock.com!

Thank You for your business!

Enid, OK: Market Report for November 1, 2005

What a market we have! It seems like every day it ought to get lower, but it goes higher! Every thing seems to be working in our favor. These are great times to be selling calves in, but it also looks like an opportunity to make some money on the other end. When you pick and choose certain classes of cattle, it looks even better.

There appears to be several opportunities in our cattle market! What’s wrong with turning out a 700 lb yearling? They cost $750.00 to $850.00 dollars a head, but you have no medicine, no death loss, and no backing up trying to get them weaned! Compare that to a 550 lb northern steer calf at $140.00, that’s $770.00, plus $30.00 freight, plus $30.00 in medicine and feed, and $10.00 in shrink, it looks like you’ve got the same amount of money in a calf that’s 150 lbs lighter!

Another thing to think about is that that yearling might sell in January instead of March, when the market is usually not as good. Getting two pounds of gain a day on wheat is great, but that won’t overcome a $5.00 drop in the market. Don’t forget that a $700.00 calf is just that, a $700 calf! We’ve all had a lot more years where we were happy to get $450.00! There’s definitely nothing wrong with taking extra money to the bank!

Winter Livestock is here to help you in any way we can to let you get your money to the bank! We have access to lots of markets to buy or sell your cattle for you! If you are in need of cattle for grazing, give us a call, we can procure them for you very easily. Marketing your cattle is also a service we can provide in many different ways, live auctions, internet auctions, video, contracting, private treaty, etc. Don’t forget, we have a very good base of hedging knowledge to offer you also!

If you have any questions or needs, don’t hesitate to call or write! You can reach us at 580-796-2150 or over the internet at www.winterlivestock.com.

The calf and yearling market look steady to higher. Light calves bringing up to $160.00, with the four and five weights selling from $120.00 to $145.00. Heavy calves from $100.00 to $120.00. Yearling heifers up to $110.00, with steers bringing up to $118.00! Butcher cows still selling off a little, from $38.00 to $48.00. Bred cows and pairs mostly bringing from $750.00 to $1000.00, with a few up to $1200.00
