Enid, OK: Market Report for October 11, 2005

Good moisture and good weather make for a good combination to start the fall season! It looks like we’ll sure have plenty of opportunity to turn cattle out this year! The last three weeks we’ve seen everything from dust blowing to water standing in the fields. There is definitely some wheat coming up, but not everywhere like last year.

The market is still going strong, with calves bringing up to $150.00 and yearlings up to $120.00. The butcher cow market is under pressure right now, with a lot of cows bringing $40.00 to $48.00. The bred cows and bred heifers still look like an excellent buy, especially with some of these calves bringing $650.00 a head!

We should start seeing a lot of calves moving in the next 30 days. The first week or two might be a good opportunity to buy calves when they don’t reach their highs. It seems like every year right at the time we want to turn them out, the prices jump $10.00 a hundred! But maybe a person should buy the factory instead of just the calf.
