This week's market report!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have we finally seen the high in our market? Possibly, but the overall strength of the market is still very good. Calves and yearlings this last week all looked from $2.00 to $4.00 lower, in places more. Fat cattle just can’t seem to get out of the rut that they are in.
It’s still a good market though! Let’s not forget that a year ago, these same cattle were bringing $15.00 to $25.00 LESS than they are now! The market is still good, and it’s still a sellers market! Take advantage of it!
We’re seeing a lot of meat going on the market right now. Steer carcasses are almost 60 pounds heavier than they were in the spring, chicken and pork are seeing record production levels and are being priced cheaper than beef. This tends to make the beef market a little tougher to sell.
Eventually, the Canadian border will open back up, putting more cattle and beef on the market. On the good side, talks with Japan and Korea are more promising, which will open up a larger market again. Keep in mind that $80.00 to $90.00 fat cattle is a great price over the last 100 years!
There looks to be a big number of tractors going down the roads and in the fields now. Wheat drilling is beginning and the prospects look good! Calves may soften up in the next several weeks due to the fact everybody is busy and not wanting to start calves. The bred cow and pair market is staying very strong, with the only weakness in the butcher market. Pairs and bred cows still look like an excellent commodity to own.
Light weight calves bringing from $140.00 to $170.00. Four and five weight steer calves bringing $120.00 to $150.00. Stocker weights are in the $105.00 to $120.00 range, with feeder cattle from $100.00 to $118.00. Butcher cows still bringing from $45.00 to $55.00 on the better kind.
