Enid, OK: Market Report for August 29, 2006

Outstanding sale here in Enid this week! We had a tremendous selection of cows for our end of the month sale. Plenty of good young and middle aged quality cows made for an excellent sale. Buyers from at least five different states on hand, while over 970 people watched the sale or bought cattle over the internet! Having over 1000 people watching and buying your cattle through the auction ring is sure amazing! Who would have thought that a few years ago?

More than 75% of the cows sold went to out of state customers, with many of the calves also going out of state! This has been a trend for over a year now, which means the cow herds in this area are not being built up! A person also has to consider the fact that pregnancy rates in the drought areas are only running from 80 to 90 percent, so the calf crop won’t be as big next year either!

It’s sure nice to have a little rain and cooler temperatures! The rain may not be enough to fill ponds, but it certainly allowed folks to get some field work done. We’ll need more timely rains to get the wheat in and growing, but more importantly, we’ll need some water for the cattle. However, there may not be as many cattle in our area as in years past.

Unless the moisture comes fairly steady, we will have another great cow sale at the end of September! We already have 350 good blk/bwf cows consigned, with 250 calves coming with them. These cows all bred to Angus bulls to calve in early spring!

Again, a tremendous auction here in Enid this week! Here are some examples:

4C Ranches 5 Blk new born pairs 1399 @ $1150.00

Garet Edwards 4 Mix pairs 1243 @ $1075.00

Doug Buller 4 Blk pairs 1260 @ $1000.00

4C Ranches 10 Blk bred heifers 996 @ $1000.00

4C Ranches 12 Blk bred cows 1222 @ $1100.00

4C Ranches 97 Blk bred cows 1300 @ $1025.00

4C Ranches 49 Blk bred cows 1260 @ $955.00

Woods Ranch 17 Blk bred cows 1146 @ $925.00

Ray Clay 9 Ang/Saler bred cows 1317 @ $925.00

4C Ranch 14 Red bred cows 1344 @ $910.00

Woods Ranch 9 Xbred bred cows 1290 @ $875.00

Pollard Farms 7 Blk bred cows 1485 @ $875.00

Rudy Simic 6 Blk bred cows 1352 @ $875.00

Thank You to all of our crew, buyers and sellers for a great sale! We appreciate you!

Enid, OK: Market Report for August 22, 2006

It’s amazing what a little rain can do. Even though it’s probably not enough, it sure makes everyone feel a little better! Although spotty, rain accumulations ranged anywhere from 10/100 to 7 inches. Just wish everyone could get the big stuff!

The calf market seems to be reflecting this little bit of moisture. Lots of calves bringing from $1.25 to $1.50, with some light weights getting contracted for $1.70! So far the futures board has been able to support some of this, although that’s not a sure thing. Yearling cattle continue to bring outstanding prices, with nine weights up to $1.09, and eight weights coming close to $1.20! What a tremendous market!

Although we’ve had some rain around, it’s still not enough to offset the moisture situation. The grass looks green in a lot of places, but the ponds and creeks are dry. If that isn’t enough, it seems like where there is water, the grass is brown or dying. Very, very few places have both grass & water in Oklahoma. With the cost of feed up in the stratosphere, many folks are being forced to sell off cattle in order to maintain something for the future.

Our special end of the month cow sale will have a tremendous selection of cows this month. All these cattle are coming to town because of feed and moisture problems, and there will be an excellent opportunity here in Enid next week!

Enid, OK: Market Report for August 15, 2006

Rain. For some it’s actually a four letter word at times, for others, especially around here, it’s a definite blessing! What little rain we have received has been very spotty, with measurements anywhere from zero to five inches. The sad thing is that the folks who need it the most are the ones not getting any.

For better or worse, the moisture situation is creating some opportunities. There are lots of cows and calves coming to town, with many folks having to sell young cows. It might be good to remember that these calves selling right now are the calves that we would normally see in October or November! The young cows selling are ones that normally wouldn’t come to town for many years! It could sure be opportunity knocking!

$700.00 spent is still $700.00 spent. Why not buy two for the price of one? Many middle age and older cows are bringing about that much money, and yet so are their babies. The calf market is still very strong, with five and six weight calves bringing up to $130.00 or better. Our video sale saw 450 lb steer calves bringing $690.00 a head, to deliver in October! Why not get the factory for just a little more, along with a much lower processing bill?

Even with calves selling so well, yearlings seem to be selling even better! What few yearlings are available are bringing excellent money. Many seven weight true steer yearlings bringing either side of $120.00, with heavy weights well over $900.00 a head! It’s definitely a great market!

Maybe one of these days we’ll be able to see the fat cattle market get back to true price discovery. It’s a crime that one day a pen of fats is worth $80.00 and the next day it’s worth $86.00. It’s also pretty interesting how we can have more Y4 cattle in the last few months than we’ve seen in the last several years, but yet the average grading percentage in the packing plants is only around 53%! If anyone can explain that, please let us know!

Enid, OK: Market Report for August 8, 2006

The market is almost as hot as the weather! What few yearlings are available are bringing great amounts of money, while cows and calves continue to sell very well, even with the large area of drought. Feed, pasture and water are the main concerns right now.

It seems like where there is pasture there is no water, and where there is water there is no pasture! Many of the cows and calves here in Oklahoma are going north to get some cheap feed rations. Probably 60 to 90% of the pairs and bred cows are going north, while the calves look like they are ending up in the feed yards and grow lots.

It seems like many people are reconsidering their fall and winter grazing options. You can buy a northern 450 lb steer calf for almost $700.00 or you can buy a cow and a calf for $700.00 to $1000.00. Which looks like a better deal, the product or the product and the factory for basically the same price?

Our cattle numbers are not building up. The middle one third of the country is in dire straits. Cows, calves or both are being sent to town in order to try and save feed or pasture. Those calves going to the feedyards will not be seen again until they go through the packing house. Many of the cows are being bought by the packers, although there is still a good percent of them going on feed or to different parts of the country.

When you consider that our national organizations want to have cattle slaughtered before they are two years old, how can you build up a herd? At the present moment, slaughter capacity is greater than production capacity. In order for us to rebuild our herds, we need a lot more rain and a lot more heifers and cows held back!

For whatever reasons, the yearling market continues to hold extremely well. The futures board has fluctuated, but it is still staying at pretty nice historical levels. Maybe we can finally catch up with the rest of the world, but let’s not hold our breath! Gas & oil prices, if they continue to go higher, may shut a lot of business down. Even with some of the size efficiencies we have, some things just cannot be overcome with today’s agriculture prices.

It looks like cows and calves will continue to come to town every week. We just cannot seem to get a great general rain. Many of this falls calves are selling now, and even though they are lighter and higher, they won’t be available come wheat pasture time! Check out our website for some pairs, bred cows and calves!

Thanks to all of our customers, we really appreciate you!

Enid, OK: Market Report for August 1, 2006

Another excellent market this week! Even with the dry conditions, calves and cows finding good outlets. The overall market is holding very strong. Many, if not most, of the cows and calves are going north and east where there is some cheaper feed. There is also a good number of yearlings and calves going to town early with water and hay both in very light supply.

It sure likes like these bred cows are an excellent opportunity. There is going to be a lot of cattle moving in the next month or two, with little rain, high priced hay, and springs going dry. Many of the older bred cows and pairs bringing the same or less as some of the big calves weaned off of them that day! Most of the time, getting two for the price of one is a great bargain!

Yearling cattle continue to bring prices a long way from break even. Eight weight feeders bringing up to $115.00, while fat steers are only bringing $80.00! That’s a pretty big gap to overcome, even with cheap feed! However, the number of available yearling cattle is not big, and a lot of this falls yearlings are already in the lots! Sometimes, possession is the key!

Keep in mind that over the last several years we have continually put younger and younger cattle into the feed yards. The genetics are “better” and cattle are gaining better. At this part of the cattle cycle, cattle are going to the packing plants before they are 2 years old. If we continue to do this, the cow herd numbers cant’ be built back up very fast. This might also explain the way cattle are grading so poorly in the packing plants.

The drought is forcing a lot of cattle to market early, and we’re seeing it every week. Next week will be yet another very nice run of pairs, bred cows and calves!

CONSIGNED FOR NEXT TUESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2006:
