Enid, OK Market Report for August 24, 2004

Fall is right here and wheat planting is starting up. With the wonderful moisture we’ve had, there should be a lot of tractors in the fields for the next month. It sure looks like we would have a great wheat pasture year if things continue in the way they’re going!
The weather patterns we’ve been seeing lately might indicate a winter with lots of moisture! We’ll hope that’s the case! Our friends and neighbors to the west of us really need it and we will too if they don’t get it. The bigger the snowfall in the winter the bigger the runoff in the spring! That means the more the creeks run for us!
There will be tremendous opportunity to run cattle this winter. Abundant feed everywhere and more calves to turn out. With the market as good as it is, folks are finally taking the calves off the cow at 450 lbs instead of 650 lbs! And that’s great for the whole industry. It gives us a chance to grow the calf on the wheat and sell them lighter as yearlings, which lets the feedyard sell them lighter as fat cattle, which puts less tonnage on the market, which keeps the market in great shape!
Come out and visit the auction! It’s only the best way to sell anything, and you’ll get a chance to see your neighbor! Winter Livestock is here to help you in anyway we can! We look forward to meeting you!
Thanks again for reading this article and paper,

Enid, OK: Market Report for August 10, 2004

The calf and feeder market is still great. The bred cows and pairs are getting higher every day it seems. Fat cattle are holding at fairly good levels. There is wonderful moisture in about every region. Demand for beef is at excellent levels and the American consumer has plenty of spending money. Let’s enjoy this wonderful atmosphere while we can.
Production levels are increasing in all protein products, putting some pressure on meat prices. However, our demand and supply in the beef market is in excellent shape and these fat cattle do have potential to get higher. It appears like there is no end to the price of replacement cows. Lots of “just good ol’” bred cows are bringing near $1000.00 a head. I’ve heard of registered pairs bringing over $2500.00! We do need to replenish our cow herd numbers, and thankfully, mother nature has given us good moisture to do it!
We have enough moisture at this time to say wheat pasture prospects look great! There’s lots of nice light calves starting to show up here at the auction, and it would be a great opportunity to get some calves started before the fall runs. The light weight calves sure look like they’ve got a chance to make some money! The futures board and pasture conditions all look conducive to letting them work! Possession is the key!
Great market in Enid again! Light weight calves to $170.00. Four and five weights up to $145.00. Stockers and feeders up to $120.00. Bred cows from $800.00 to $1100.00, pairs up to $1400.00. Enid, OK: Market Report for August 3, 2004

Well, the market may have actually found a top! The fat cattle seem to peak out around $90.00 and then drop back to $82.00. There were actually cattle auctions calling their markets lower! We’ve had a great run this inning and we should be thankful for the high prices we’ve been getting this last year.
The overall economy is still very strong and people are still going out to eat all the time! It’s amazing how much money has been made in the last five or ten years! Lottery winners in the hundred millions, stock market portfolios reaping thousands of dollars, fat cattle making $200 a head and more! These are just a few things contributing to the overall bullishness of our economy.
People are getting real bullish with heifer retention. It looks pretty gutsy to hold onto $700.00 yearling heifers or $600.00 calves off the cow! Retaining ownership looks wonderful when they only bring $350.00, but why hold them when they are bringing prices never before seen in history? There will always be more cattle to choose from, but money does run out!
Several calves starting to show up here in Enid. It’s a good market! Light weights up to $170.00, with four and five weights $120.00 to $140.00! Yearlings lightly tested this week, $105.00 to $115.00. Butcher cows and bulls $1.00 lower this week. Looking for a good run next week! Give us a call for any and all of your market needs!
