Up and down and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows! The futures board doesn’t seem to have a definite direction. It’s been generally up for the last three or four years, but the last few months it’s fluctuated quite a bit. Even so, the prices are exceptionally good. Rain continues to be hard to come by. Several places have received some moisture, but it’s very spotty. The areas that have not been getting any rain are extremely dry, and look like they might stay that way. There are lots of cows and calves going to town along with yearlings heading off early also. The market has stayed fairly strong, especially for the yearling cattle. Even with the heat of the last week, calves have held up pretty well. There seem to be a lot of light calves selling now that would not normally sell until October or November. It appears like the cattle numbers are not going to get bigger any time soon. With the big number of cows going to market, and many of them going to the packers, our herd build up will take longer yet. There seems to be a lot of heifers being bred, but their calves are at least a year and a half away from the market. Yearlings are harder and harder to come by, but are selling extremely well. Here at Enid this week, we had an excellent market all the way around. Light weight calves up to $170.00, four and five weights up to $135.00, with stocker cattle lightly tested to $120.00. Feeder steers bringing from $103.00 to $112.00, with eight weight heifers up to $105.00. Butcher cows from $42.00 to $50.00. Bred cows and pairs ran the full gamut, from $500.00 for and old, small pair, to $1200.00 for young pairs. SPECIAL DROUGHT SALE NEXT TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2006! Greenman Ranches 200 Angus/Red Angus/Simm cross pairs, 3 to 6 yrs old, bred Back to calve in February. Some fall calvers also! The calf and yearling market is holding very strong! Even with the heat wave we’ve been experiencing, calves are selling very well, with feeders selling even better! Lots of stocker cattle bringing over $600.00 a head, with quite a few heavy yearlings bringing over $900.00. This is a fantastic sellers market! It’s interesting and frustrating at the same time to watch the futures board! One day the board goes down $1.50 and the next day it’s back up $2.00, with no rhyme or reason as to why. The fat market is pretty similar, with fats worth $85.00 one day and then selling for $79.00 the next, again with no reasons other than the whim of the packer. Choice beef is now around $1.45, after coming down about $10.00, cattle are yielding about 63%, and doing the basic math, fat cattle ought to be worth somewhere around $91.00, yet we’re struggling to get $81.00! Demand is great and just the sheer volume of people in the world should make for a good beef market! Going around the country, it looks like everybody is in the same boat. If you live in the right quarter section of land you get rain, if you don’t then it’s dry. The rains have been extremely spotty all across the plains, and it shows. The are plenty of areas that have excellent water and grazing, but right next door or a few miles away, there might be dirt blowing instead of grass growing! Let’s all be thankful for what we do have in the USA! SPECIAL COW SALE NEXT TUESDAY, JULY 25, 2006! Thunderbird Ranch 250 Blk/Bwf/Red/Charx cows, bred to Parker Angus Bulls, 3-10 yrs old.
