Enid, OK: Market Report for July 13, 2004

here's this weeks market report! :)
_

The market is still great! Feeder cattle holding steady with calves edging
higher all the time! The futures board is sitting near all time highs on
feeders, while the feeder cattle index is five to six dollars higher yet!
This would indicate the market could go up!

That seems hardly possible as high as it is, yet the index is what those
futures are settled on. Of course, delivering the actual cattle would be
better, but that's government and politics for ya. Looking at that board,
it's hard to believe that there is that big a spread between the feeder
cattle futures and the live cattle futures. It doesn't look like they will
work at all!

Believe this or not, I actually had more than one person tell me that
packers were losing money! I have yet to see it in black and white. Last
time I checked, they were making record profits every quarter, and in the
millions! Just because they are not making as much money as last quarter
doesn't mean they're losing money! Get a clue!

The market must be getting near the top. Packers are spreading rumors about
losing money, industry leaders and feedyards are promoting retained
ownership, and there are actually people who complain about $115.00 feeder
cattle!

Here in Enid this week, we had another nice run of mostly cows and calves,
with those and the yearlings very strong! The available numbers are still
way behind the demand for them!

3-400 lb calves from $130.00 to $160.00

4-500 lb calves from $120.00 to $145.00

5-600 lb calves from $115.00 to $130.00

6-700 lb cattle from $107.00 to $125.00

7-900 lb cattle from $105.00 to $120.00

There will be a change on the way that dairy cattle are handled, beginning
September 1, 2004! Please call us at Winter Livestock Inc to get more
information!

Thank you, for your time and business,

Enid, OK Market Report for July 6, 2004

What a turnaround in a year’s time! The cattle market is $10.00 to $25.00 higher than a year ago! There has been excellent moisture in a big area! The temperature has been very accommodating for the first part of summer. The wheat crop was good, the calf crop is good, and demand for our beef is excellent!

Again, this looks like a wonderful year to take your profits and go to the bank! How many times in our lives have calves off the cow brought $600.00 to $700.00 dollars a head? Once! It’s exciting to see all these calves get contracted for so much money! I am truly glad for the American producer!

This is one of the few times in history that it looks good to contract calves for fall delivery. Until this market gets more stable, protect your profits. Don’t just look a gift horse in the mouth! We have an opportunity to make good money in the next year or two! But, remember, we MUST have an open, competitive market to sustain these levels! Do not let ourselves fall into the same trap as the fat cattle market!

The better markets are attained by selling into them, not holding out for them! Let’s also keep in mind that, when we sell the bigger, better bunches in the auctions, the rest of the cattle get a better price! Let’s price ALL of our cattle off the best ones, not the lesser ones!

We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Independence Day holiday! We had a great sale and hamburger feed here in Enid this week! A light run with the excellent rains and holiday, but a great market anyway! I would like to thank all of our friends and customers who stopped by Tuesday! We really appreciate it!

The market seems to be holding steady on stockers and feeders, with butcher cows and stock cows edging higher all the time! Calves bringing from $110.00 to $150.00, Stockers from $110.00 to $125.00, Feeders from $95.00 to $115.00, butcher cows and bulls from $40.00 to $70.00 and pairs up to $1400.00!

Give us a call and come visit! We are here to work for you!

Thanks again,

Weston Winter
