Enid, OK Market Report for June 28, 2005

What is BSE? It seems like it stands for nothing more than B.S.Everywhere! Why would a cow that has been out of commission, and out of the food chain, and out of sight for seven months be retested? That seems ludicrous at best. I’m all for redundancy on safety issues, but a little common sense would work a lot better!

What does one cow matter in the scheme of things? There is no conclusive scientific evidence that BSE is a cause of any human disease. The disease that they are trying to tie it to has only been responsible, indirectly, of 150 deaths in the world in the last 20 years! There will be more people die of drug overdose in the next 10 days than bse has caused in the last 20 years!

It looks like the general population does realize this. The futures board started out over 100 lower on Monday morning, but worked to close 100 higher by the close. The calf and yearling market is steady, if not actually a little stronger! Butcher cows are holding their own, while pairs and bred cows continue to see very strong demand from all over! So why is there so much media on one cow? That’s like saying that one pebble of sand on the beach in Miami will affect the health of every person that goes for a swim!

We have an excellent market and excellent demand for our product. There is not a better dinner on any table than a great steak or hamburger! Our supply of market ready cattle dwindles every year, as do our numbers of cows. We have possibly started a herd buildup, but we have a long way to go! The heifer numbers in the feedyards are still at very respectable levels, making it look like they are not all being kept for replacements!

Butcher cows bringing up to $60.00 this week, with bulls up to $73.00. Fly weight calves up to $190.00, with stocker cattle selling from $115.00 to $145.00. Yearlings and feeders bringing from $100.00 to $115.00. Bred cows and pairs still in great demand, and bringing up to $1400.00.

Winter Livestock in Enid will be closed next week to observe the Fourth of July holiday. Our internet services will still be going. Don’t forget our next video auction on July 19 and our monthly cow auction in Enid on July 26! Go to www.winterlivestock.com or call 580-796-2150 for more information!

Thank You for all your business!

Market Report for June 21, 2005

The optimism in our market is overwhelming! The demand for cattle and beef is still excellent! Feeder cattle are still bringing over $100.00, while calves are being contracted for $120.00 to $150.00! How much more could we want?

The cattle auctions across the country are seeing the usual summer numbers, and the market is still very strong. Our video auction this month saw excellent attendance over the web, and it looks like there will be great demand for calves this fall. Yearling cattle are still in short supply, and the demand from the cornbelt continues to be very intense. Take advantage of the internet auction, it’s an excellent way for buyers to see and buy your cattle without having to drive 1000 miles!

We should all be thankful for the great market we have. Even with the politicians, media, or packers trying to do something with a piece of bovine tissue, our product just can’t be beat! Just drive through any decent sized town between 5:00 and 8:00 pm, and it looks like there is a line to get into any restaurant you come across. I’m fairly certain they’re not all ordering chicken or pork!

The BSE issue is just that – an issue and not a reality. The reality is that there is no scientific proof of any relationship between bse and any human disease. The reality is that more people die of drug and alcohol abuse in one month than the total number of supposedly related deaths in the whole world in the last twenty years! Let’s get real!

It will be interesting to see in the years to come how much influence our checkoff dollars will have on the market. There has been literally millions of dollars give to the beef checkoff, but where does it all go? I finally heard an advertisement for beef last week, the first time in over a year! We have the best market we have ever seen in the history of the cattle industry, beef cow numbers lower than they have been in fifty years, more people in the world than ever eating beef and less people handling them. So, how is the checkoff actually helping the producer? Let’s just be thankful we live in the country we do, and have a good life in agriculture!

We will be having our monthly special cow sale on Tuesday, June 28, 2005! We’re expecting a couple hundred bred cows and pairs from three to ten years old. There will also be 150 yearlings consigned. Please call or visit our website at www.winterlivestock.com for more information.

Thanks to all of our sellers and buyers!
