BULLISH! That’s only one way to describe the market we are in. Optimism is flowing freely everywhere, judging by the prices these feeders are bringing! This is a market everyone should enjoy! Whether they weigh 600 or 900, take them to town! They are all bringing over a dollar!
We had a fantastic video sale this week! Fall delivery calves weighing 425lbs brought 148.00, 500lb steers for fall delivery up to $135.00, six weights to $120.00, and feeder steers up to $110.00! Some extremely nice 3 yr old bred cows brought $1310.00 while their calves brought $737.00! If that isn’t a great market, I guess I don’t know what one is.
Things don’t seem like they could get any better, but we just had from 2 to 6 inches of soaking rains all across the wheat belt. The grass and fields look fantastic all the way from Minnesota to central Texas! We have an excellent opportunity to take in or turn out these bred heifers and cows, and stocker cattle!
People are starting to push retained ownership again. WHY? It seems that there is always a big push to retain ownership when the market is at the high and risk is the greatest. What would you rather put on feed, a 700 lb steer at $85.00 or one at $120.00? The math is too basic to ignore. This is a market that everybody should take advantage of and enjoy! Let the packers and corporations take the risk instead of us!
One nice thing about this market is that the futures board makes everything look rosy! Almost all the feeder cattle contracts are over $100.00! The August as of this writing is sitting over $112.00! This is a market that a guy shouldn’t say how much can I get for my cattle, but how much did I get!
Opportunity is knocking down the door! We have the highest market in recorded history and we’re not even selling our beef to Japan! How much better would the American beef industry be if we sold beef to Japan and closed the southern border as well? It’s mind boggling! The advancements in nutrition, technology, population, etc., are making our cattle and beef extremely sought after! Enjoy it!
We are looking forward to a great time here at Winter Livestock! We have the facilities and know how help you in all of our cattle phases! Give us a call! We want to work for you!
Thank You very much

Wheat harvest in Oklahoma is all but over, with most folks talking 25 to 35 bushels, and a few up to 40. The moisture has been good here, just a little untimely. It’s amazing how fast this big equipment can get over the ground. Lots of ground is already worked up and ready to go again.
The cattle market, of course, is outstanding. We are selling eight weight feeder steers for the same dollars a hundred that 400 llb calves were bringing just a few years ago. At that time, it looked liked $500 a head for a calf was pretty high, but now it’s hard to buy one under that! Let’s be thankful for this great market.
If this isn’t a sellers market, I’m not sure what one is. $1000.00 for feeder steers, $600 for stockers, $1400 for bred cows and pairs. Why wouldn’t a guy sell on this kind of market? You know the saying: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Looking forward to some great auctions in the next year. Summer video sales are starting with lots of fall delivery calves. What few summer grass yearlings there are may be hard to come by this fall. It appears like this would be an excellent year to start some calves this summer in order to have those yearlings later.
There are thousands of opportunities to market your cattle. Winter Livestock can help. Live auction, video auction, internet, country trade, hedging, procurement---whatever you may need, Winter Livestock can help. Give us a call to make your life easier!
How do you quote a market like this? It’s actually easier than you might think! They’re all bringing a lot!! Most of the yearling cattle are bringing $100.00 to $120.00, with calves bringing $110.00 to $150.00. That is one heck of a market! Take advantage of it!
Looking forward to working for you!

Enid, OK: Market Report for June 1, 2004

Wheat harvest has begun in full. Combines and trucks are running everywhere. So far the harvest is going well, although there is more talk of 25 to 35 bushel wheat instead of 35 to 45 bushel. It’s too wet in the corn belt and too dry in the wheat belt. This could be a good indication of the grain futures going higher. It appears like there may be several fields being cut for hay instead of grain, with the prospects for moisture slim, this might be a better idea than it looks.
The cattle market is still great! Lots of feeder cattle bringing over $95.00/cwt with a good amount of them bringing over $100.00! Some of these big feeding steers are bringing $900.00 to $1000.00 a head! And that’s before they get on the truck! Very Optimistic! Calves still very active, although the wheat harvest may slow them down a bit. With the size of today’s combines and equipment, it won’t take long though! This is generally a good time of year to get some calves since the fluctuation in temperature is not as extreme as in the fall. This would be a great year for folks to pre-treat some of these calves while they are still on their momma--weaned calves are probably going to bring a big premium this year after last years health problems!
The moisture situation is getting critical. This time in places that have not been droughted out yet. More of the northern country is seeing cows and calves go to town. There have been several big runs of pairs in the Dakotas. The prices are excellent, but so are the opportunities! Oklahoma is drying up fast! Four solid weeks of hot dry weather and high winds. These pastures that were green last week, are turning brown now! The western states are just in bad shape-period. Not enough snow or rain to help for a couple years. It will come someday though!
Somebody mention national id: please don’t! Tell your congressman, senators and next door neighbors that national id is an accident waiting to happen. Let the OTHER countries identify their cattle to come into our borders! At the bare minimum, charge somebody besides the producer. What about all those MILLIONS of dollars of profit that the packers and retailers have had over the last few years? Couldn’t they pay for that? Since our checkoff dollars are making their profits, I would think it’s only right for them to pay their fair share.
Excellent market here in Enid this week. Harvest runs starting with lighter numbers. Calves from $105.00 to $124.00. Yearlings and feeder cattle from $95.00 to $107.00. Butcher cows $38.00 to $48.00. Bulls from $60.00 to $65.00.
