Enid, OK: Market Report for May 16, 2006

Great market again this week! After several months of the market going down, it’s nice to see an upswing. Calves and stockers seem to holding steady, but we are going into harvest rather quickly, and demand may start to slack off a little. Moisture is still playing a big role in our industry. Eastern Oklahoma and Kansas have received some much needed rain, filling ponds and letting the grass grow. However, eastern Colorado, western Kansas and Oklahoma are seeing conditions similar to several years ago when all the pairs exited that part of the country! Weather isn’t the only thing making cattle move. People from the cities and the coasts are moving out to the open country and making land prices skyrocket. Grass pasture that’s only worth $200.00 an acre is bringing $1000.00 or more! It’s unbelievable what some folks are willing to pay just to go hunting or have a pretty view! The market itself seems to have made the turn! If a person looks at charts and such, it appears like there might have been a bottom made, with the market going up from here. Of course, that doesn’t make it so, but it sure makes a guy feel better. After one of the biggest breaks in history, maybe it’s time to start back up again. Good demand for all classes of cattle this week! About 1700 cattle selling in very active trade. Most of the big cattle going north, with a few stockers and bred cows staying local. Here’s a few representative sales: 4 blk/bwf hfrs 392 @ $142.00 20 blk/bwf hfrs 426 @ $131.00 69 blk/red hfrs 721 @ $97.50 72 blk/red hfrs 779 @ $96.50 31 Angus hfrs 901 @ $87.50 37 mix strs 779 @ $102.00 65 mix strs 846 @ $98.50 186 blk strs 890 @ $94.00 111 blk strs 940 @ $88.90 111 limo strs 925 @ $92.00 58 Brangus strs 910 @ $91.00 37 char strs 954 @ $87.00 Consigned for next Tuesday, May 23, 2006: Birdseye Ranch 550 Ang/Limx strs, off graze out, 800 to 1000 lbs Dildine Cattle 70 Angus sired strs/hfrs, off grass, 700 to 800 lbs Vaughn Ranch 40 Angus x cows/calves, 3-10 yr old pairs, Calves sired by Angus & Limo bulls cows running back with bulls

What an amazing world and an amazing country we live in! The internet allows us to communicate and do business with virtually anyone in the world via a computer. If you tune in to www.cattleusa.com, you can watch cattle being sold all across the country, live, as they walk through the auction rings, without ever leaving home! If you were watching auctions this week, you might have seen 720 lb hereford steers bringing $805.00 a head, while at the same time seeing 950 lb black steers bringing $850.00 a head! What other industry in the world can you buy 32% more product for basically the same price? This is also the same industry where the older factories bring fewer dollars than the product they make! America is the greatest country in the world. What other country in the world can you cheat, lie, get free medical services, free education, religious freedom, a paycheck and the freedom to protest against the very country giving you those services? Our government is the best there is, when its backbone is in shape. The cattle market is pretty interesting also! A few inches of rain can make calves $10.00 higher, and wheat $5.00 lower! We finally received some fantastic rain here in Oklahoma, with some areas getting as much as 6 inches! Ponds and creeks now have some water for the cattle and prices are reflecting that. Of course, it seems like you have to live east of highway 81 to get the good stuff! J The market here in Enid was very active this week, with lots of out of state buying interest. Both feeders and bred cows are leaving our area to go north. Calves sure looked better this week, with 445 lb weaned heifers bringing $130.00, and six weight stocker steers up to $120.00. 750 to 950 lb steers all bringing either side of $800.00 a head. Yearling and feeder heifers selling from $85.00 to $95.00. Butcher cows were lower this week, but bred cows and pairs looked higher. CONSIGNED FOR NEXT TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2006: MC FARMS 200 Ang/Lim/Charx heifers, off rye, 575 to 650 lbs. Heifers are in thin flesh and ready to graze! Cowley Ranch 140 Eng/Exotx heifers, 700 to 800 lbs, gtd open Wright Ranch 120 Ang/Limx steers, home raised, 700 to 900 lbs WW Cattle Co. 200 Blk/Bwf steers, off graze out, 800 to 950 lbs T & G Land & Cattle 50 Blk/Bwf/Rwf cows, bred to blk bulls, 4-10 yrs old May sales will start at 10:00 am!
