Enid, OK: Market Report April 24, 2007

It’s a great market still. Even with grains as high as they are, feeder cattle continue to sell extremely well! Calves and stockers are still in demand, and we’ve actually had excellent moisture! The grass is growing and wheat that looked dead is now showing signs of a good crop!

Moisture, or the lack of it, plays a very big role in the agriculture industry. It is the difference between profit and loss, and doing business or not. We have to have moisture to make things work, but it’s sure funny how calves can bring more money when the dust is blowing than when the water is flowing! A month ago there didn’t seem to be enough cows or calves for everyone to buy, but now that we’ve gotten moisture, they seem to be lower! Some of these heifer pairs might be $100.00 lower than a month ago!

The hay situation doesn’t look like it’s going to change dramatically from last year. There have been many years worth of hay piles eaten up this past year, and it sounds like there might be quite a bit of wheat put up in bales this year. Prices for hay might come down a little, but there will probably still be a huge demand for it!

Fat cattle are still holding up pretty well, although they didn’t stay at $100.00 for very long! Calves and stocker still holding up around $125, with lighter feeder cattle bringing above $100.00 and the heavy weights in the $90.00’s. We’ve had a great market for several years, and it seems to have moved up to a different level. Hopefully, it will be able to sustain that for years to come!

There might be some movement of graze out cattle in the next week or two. The cold weather slowed the growth down some and many cattle are going to have to move early. Once the cattle move off the wheat there sure won’t be many cattle to choose from!

Enid, OK: Market Report April 10, 2007

What a fantastic market we have! Fat cattle up to $100.00, yearling cattle up to $120.00, with stockers up to $140.00 and cut out values at all time highs! Moisture has finally found its way here, green grass is growing, barbeque time is coming, and demand for beef is great, can we ask for anything more?

It’s been a very interesting spring. A month ago, everything was brown, short, or dead. Then the rains came, and the wheat grew by the minute, grass came out of the ground, and leaves started showing up on the trees. It’s almost unbelievable how fast things turned around! Although it still just looks like March, spring time is definitely here, and all that goes with it.

Cattle numbers in the U.S. continue to hold back from a big expansion. Drought and a good market have made selling more of an option than keeping. With the moisture we’ve had, it appears like there will be a much greater opportunity to keep back some cows this summer. There continues to be pretty good movement of stockers and feeders across the country, but most of it is outside of Oklahoma. There are a few pockets of graze out cattle around, but look to be few and far between. The cold snap last week will probably move a few May cattle early, although gains should be good.

Enid, OK: Market Report April 3, 2007

Another great week at the auction market! Green grass and growing wheat are making for excellent demand on stocker cattle and replacement cattle. The futures board is also helping out quite a bit, with feeder cattle futures sitting at $111.00 and looking to go higher. Fat cattle have jumped back up, with bids at $100.00 as of Wednesday.

Driving around the countryside, a person really doesn’t see very many cattle turned out, except in certain places. All around Enid, which usually has thousands of cattle on wheat, it’s hard to find a few hundred. In the grass grazing areas, some of the grass is green, but extremely short, with folks trying to hold onto their cows all winter. It would appear like we have a great opportunity to restock the central part of the U.S. this year.

The supply and demand for beef is making for an outstanding market. Demand for our beef is great while the supply seems very short. Costs of gain have also somewhat limited the numbers going into the feedyards, and packing plants have cut their kills back over 100,000 head a week! Cutout values are reflecting that, with prices back up near $160.00 on the choice offerings. That comes out to around $102.00 for choice fat cattle! A person would think that feeder cattle and calves would follow suit!

What is a young pair worth? If you split them up, the cow’s worth somewhere around $600.00 and a month old calf is bringing somewhere around $300.00, that’s $900.00 for the pair. But if a person looks at it for the long haul, that calf and all the consecutive calves might be worth $800.00! Over ten years, that makes that cow worth $8800.00! So why wouldn’t a person buy a young pair for $1500.00?

Keep thinking about buying heifer calves or big calves! For the same amount of money, a person can buy a fourth more heifers, or 100 lbs of calf! In the end, they may all sell at the same time, but you end up with either more cattle or more money! The cow herd build up has not really begun in full swing yet, so if there is pasture, take advantage of it!

Don’t forget to watch all the auctions over the internet at www.winterlivestock.com; it’s a very easy and practical way to buy cattle all over the country!

END OF THE MONTH COW SALE, TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 2007

Steinert Farms 200 Fancy, Blk/Bwf pairs, out of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado Cows are 5-8 yrs old, with calves up to 3 mos old
Calves are sired out of high growth, “profit maker” bulls
