Enid, OK: Market Report for March 28, 2006

We had an excellent market here in Enid! There was a tremendous selection of pairs and bred cows, with a great attendance of people. The overall market remains very strong on replacements and stockers. 1645 cattle selling, with about 1200 pairs and bred cows! Stockers and feeders in light supply. There seems to be plenty of wheat being insured this year, which would seem to make a lot of pasture available. Calves and stockers have seen a great increase in demand, with prices getting higher. Some six weight steers bringing above $120.00! It sure seems that these bred cows and pairs look like a good buy when stocker cattle are bringing over $700.00 a head! Again, a great market for pairs, bred cows and stocker cattle here in Enid. We had very nice quality from all around the state. Here a just a few representative sales: Jacobs Bros. Enid, OK: Market Report for March 14, 2006

It’s still an exciting market! Even with the market so much lower, there is still lots of demand and activity for stockers and yearlings! Bred cows and pairs also selling to high demand. We’re seeing a lot more northern buyers at the auction, with a good amount of demand for the better cattle. The market this week was strong on stockers and steady on feeders. Stocker weight cattle bringing up to $123.00, with light calves up to $140.00. Feeder cattle bringing from $87.00 to $103.00. Butcher cows up to $51.00, with bulls bringing up to $65.00. Bred cows and pairs lightly tested, $700.00 to $1000.00. If there was such a thing as contracting at the right time, this fall was it! At one point in December, all the feeder cattle contracts on the futures board were within 1.00 of $117.00. Lots of cattle contracted there are delivering right now ten to twenty dollars a hundred higher than the cash market! Maybe it’s time to be buying! The basis will be coming back together in the near future, and that opportunity may not come around again for a long time. This is the first year in a lot of years that feeders are just bringing back first cost. I think a lot of folks would love to handle a northern calf, but for $150.00 a head difference, I think it would be better to buy these good Oklahoma calves! We’re seeing some of those northern steers, which cost $800.00 as a calf, barely bringing $800.00 as a feeder! All in all, the pretty ones usually cost more and are nicer to look at, but the ones everyone wants are the cattle that make more! It seems that the biggest braggers this spring will be the ones that made money, not the ones that gained 3 plus pounds a day! Don’t forget about those bred cows and pairs! A good young pair or bred cow could certainly produce a $700.00 calf! It still looks like bred cows or heifers are the best commodity in the cattle industry. Our cattle numbers are still low, and beef demand is still high. We are going into the spring and summer, and there ought to be a few more grills burning every day! SPECIAL MONTHLY COW SALE, TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 2006!!! Now consigned: Jacobs Bros Ranch 162 Blk/Bwf 1st calf heifer pairs, Angus x calves born In Oct-Dec. Nice, big pairs! Edwards Ranch 50 Blk/Bwf 1st calf heifer pairs, Jan-Feb calves! Please call ahead with your consignments for maximum advertising! Watch the sales live @ www.winterlivestock.com! Thank You to all of our customers! Weston Winter

Enid, OK: Market Report for March 7, 2006

How good have we had it? The last three years we have had a fantastic market, with record prices on almost every class of cattle. Calves off the cow the last few years have probably averaged over $600.00 a head, with bigger calves averaging over $700.00! Yearling cattle at one time were bringing $900.00 to $1000.00 a head! We have come to a changing point in the cattle market. Over the last month, feeder prices have come down several dollars a hundred, with some of the bigger cattle selling in the high eighties. Eight weight steers are just bringing in the nineties, with seven weights just breaking a dollar. Heifers of course are selling behind the steers until they get fat. Even with these kinds of numbers, we should remember that these prices are still way above what the cattle have brought over the last 50 years. This is especially great for the cow/calf operator, while the stocker operators have had to work on pretty much the same type margins. The gains have been great this year, but not quite enough recently to out do the market drop. Something that is out of whack is our basis. Normally, par for futures delivery is a 750 lb steer about even with the board, while an 850 lb steer is 3.00 to 5.00 back. The last few weeks though, the big cattle have been discounted up to $12.00! If nothing else, that sure might indicate a buying opportunity. When products are being sold at a discount, that’s usually a good time to buy! The cattle have done all they could do this year. Gains have been either side of 3 lbs a day on the wheat, and near 4 pounds in the yards. Many cattle are 100 pounds bigger than last year coming off the wheat, and presumably the same thing is happening in the feed yards. If you multiply 100 pounds for every head of cattle in the U.S., that’s a lot of beef being produced! Spring time is basically here, and the next few weeks will determine whether there is going to be any graze out wheat or not. Many folks are spraying for green bugs in Oklahoma, while the dry weather is keeping the wheat from growing about everywhere! We received about a half inch of rain here Tuesday night, which is definitely a beginning! We all hope there will be more moisture to follow. The market itself appears to be bottoming out. There are a lot more buyers in the seats and on the internet at these lower prices. The feedyards are selling cattle which will empty out some pens, and of course, demand for beef is still excellent. Sometime in the next few months, all those calves and drought cattle will be coming out of the pens, and then it will be very interesting to see how those pens get filled back up! Thank You to all of those attending our auctions, either in person or over the internet! We really appreciate your business and attendance! Winter Livestock has many tools to help you, and that’s what we are here for! Looking forward to maybe one more week of good wheat runs. If we can be of any service, please give us a call!

Enid, OK: Market Report for February 28, 2006

The wheat run is starting! There are lots of cattle moving off the wheat here in Oklahoma. Every chance of rain just seems to be going by us, which leaves even graze out possibilities questionable. The cattle have done excellent this year, with a lot of cattle 100 pounds heavier than last year. The market is holding well at these lower levels. Stockers are still bringing excellent prices, with feeder cattle bringing in the $90.00 to $105.00 range. Green yearlings bringing over $100.00 with the heavier, fleshier cattle selling in the $90.00’s. The butcher cow market seems to be edging upward each week. We had an outstanding selection of pairs and bred cows for our monthly special cow sale. First calf heifer pairs bringing from $1400.00 to $1550.00, with nice 3 year old bred cows bringing up to $1400.00. Solid mouth cows selling from $900.00 to $1200.00, and older cows bringing up to $900.00. Even with fat cattle priced as they are and weather conditions holding dry, the demand for stockers and feeders is increasing every week. At these price levels there are a lot more people willing to buy them, and it shows up at the auction. There is tremendous demand for the higher quality pairs and bred cows, with many of them going north along with the yearlings. The big question now is whether to cut the wheat with a combine or a herd of cattle. If we get rain, the wheat crop is assured, but so are the grazing possibilities! With the number of wheat pasture cattle so low, it may be a good year to graze the wheat out. Within a 50 mile radius of Enid there are a good number of cattle getting ready to sell, outside of that there does not appear to be very many cattle. The number of graze out wheat cattle will be very short this year if something doesn’t change. Come visit us here in Enid! We will be having very nice runs for the next couple of weeks. We have pen space, with hay and water, for 10,000 cattle. Our people are the very best, and the market is great! If you can’t be here in person, you can watch the auction as it happens at www.winterlivestock.com! You can also register to buy the cattle online as they walk through the ring! ESTIMATING 4000 CATTLE FOR NEXT TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2006! The sale will be predominantly load lots of wheat pasture yearlings. If you have any questions or need to consign cattle, please give us a call at 580-796-2150! Thank You, Weston Winter
