Enid, OK: Market Report for March 16th, 2004

2367 CATTLE SOLD TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2004

Isn’t the agriculture business interesting? We have a multi-billion dollar industry that worries about a 100.00 cow. We have ranchers that will stay up all night, keep a fire warm, and put a calf in his kitchen to keep it alive. We have farmers that will work 48+ hours in a row to get their wheat cut in time. We are an industry that will spend millions of dollars hoping to make a five to ten percent return. How great would the other industry’s be if their people cared that much? It seems that most of the “big-time CEO’s” are more worried about their retirement or investment account rather than their business or integrity.

We’re still wondering what “national id” means. For over a hundred years cattle have been branded, ear tagged, ear notched, freeze branded, dallied, and described to identify them. There are folks who take special pride in their cattle and can call each of them by name. Should we start implanting our children? It doesn’t make much sense to make the few thousand that call cattle their livelihood spend all their money to identify their cattle for the FEW packers and retailers who make all the money! If the purpose of national id is to put the small and medium sized operators out of business, then it might be worth the expense. If that is not it’s purpose, the why do we need it?

The wheat run appears to be over already. The number of cattle on wheat pasture this year was a far cry from what it normally is. The number of available cattle for sale is decreasing every year. So many packers and feedyards are employing wheat farmers, that the number of cattle for sale may soon be less than the captive supplies.

This is one of those exceptional years when the market is going UP in March rather than down! Take advantage of it! This week in Enid:

Enid, OK: Market Report for March 9, 2004

2300 CATTLE SOLD TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 2004

Wonderful moisture over a big area last week! Lots of good rain around with some places getting a little more than needed. We had a few creeks and rivers run over here in Oklahoma, but I did hear that western Kansas and Colorado got some moisture! Graze out wheat prospects and grass prospects look great! These stocker prices are reflecting that too! Pairs and bred cows selling good. The replacement heifer market is somewhere out by Jupiter! I saw some replacement Angus heifers bring over $2000.00 a head! WOW!

It’s certainly great to see the enthusiasm in the market and in the general population. I notice that there is still a lot of people that go out to eat every night. The shopping malls are still busy and the price of gas is going up, yet the big car market hasn’t dropped much. This thing called credit may be more of a danger than we know!

Our fat cattle market is about as good as we can ask. Carcass weights have dropped almost 12 pound from last year! Feedlots are very current in their marketings and replacement cattle are hard to find. The wheat run will be over next week. It is amazing how many cattle have moved in the last 20 days and how many of them were already spoken for.

One more week of wheat cattle runs! Winter Livestock, at all of it’s locations, has feed and water pens to handle 10,000 plus cattle each! If you need to pull off early give us a call, we have the place for you! 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year!

Enid, OK: Market Report for March 2, 2004

What’s your dollar worth? Not as much as it used to be, and it’s worth less overseas. Corn is in short supply, world-wide demand is high, and our exports are very good. If corn prices remain high, feeder cattle won't be able to stand the pressure. These good prices we are receiving now may not last.

Life is funny a lot of the time. Sometimes you get good things, sometimes bad. Most of the time it's good, kind of like our cattle market right now. Four months ago it was the highest it's ever been in recorded history, now it's at some of the highest levels in the last 20 years!

When I was younger working in Dodge City, I asked Jack and Ray why Jack started calves so low. They told me the feeder cattle and fat cattle were bought by professionals and the calves by mostly non-professionals. Well, that made sense to me. What doesn't make sense now is that fat cattle trade in a wider range than calves and in shorter periods of time. What happened to professionalism in our fat market?

The market is extremely good for this time of year. Try to take advantage of it! 3000 head here in Enid this week! Give us a call! We're just the guys next door!
