Enid, OK: Market Report for February 24, 2004

Another great week to sell cattle! Even with the wheat run on and the numbers here at the sale barn increasing, the market is still very strong!
Take advantage of this good market! There isn’t but $20.00 to $35.00 a head difference between an 800 lb steer and a 900lb steer! That extra hundred lbs isn’t paying for much! The normal trend from March 1 to May 1 is down approximately 90% of the time. This may be one of the few years we see it go the other way!
It’s always interesting, to say the least, to see how many irons get thrown in the fire in an election year. As little as five or ten years ago, the fat market might fluctuate $1.00 to $3.00 in a week’s time, now we see it move as much as $8.00 a hundred in 24 hours! And that’s just on a rumor! The futures board is now trading with a 3.00 limit! That makes it even more volatile. Whatever happened to trading quarters on fat cattle?
2382 cattle here in Enid this week:

Enid, OK: Market Report for February 17, 2004

The wheat run is happening! Our receipts here in Enid have almost tripled from last week! Great moisture and then some cold weather has made for conditions where cattle need to move! Lots of muddy pastures here in Oklahoma, and the cold weather has turned the wheat back. I see a lot of panels and portable corrals getting set up. March 15 is only 3 weeks away!
This is a great year to sell cattle! Steer calves are $10.00 to $20.00 higher than last year at the same time! Yearling and feeder steers are $10.00 to $15.00 higher! Cow meat is $17.00 higher than a year ago! Let’s be thankful for the great market we have! Our neighbors in Canada placed 71% fewer cattle on feed than the year before. We may have to feed a lot more people!
Whoever says the beef market is no good and there’s no demand needs to go eat at a fine restaurant in a big city. I personally witnessed a dinner bill for four people in Oklahoma City, -- that’s filets, salads, five drinks, and one spinach dip, add up to over $400.00! Lord knows what it would cost in New York! Not to mention the fact the restaurant was crowded! That’s robbery just as bad as fat cattle at $75.00! Luckily, I didn’t have to pay for it! Call me if you would like to know where to get a great meal!
Winter Livestock is here to work for you! We have outstanding facilities, personnel, and know-how. Take advantage of our modern scales, rings, pen spaces and knowledge. The modern sale barn is a lot different than it was 30 years ago! Please don’t forget that when you give two percent of your weight you give away two percent of your money when you sell them in the country! Here in Enid this week:
Mark Thrower blk-strs 322 @ $132.00 Loren Doerksen mix-hfrs 410 @ $111.50 Tracy Prince blk-strs 487 @ $108.50 Mark Thrower blk-hfrs 480 @ $108.00 Tommy Brandt mix-strs 528 @ $108.00 Bedwell Bros. mix-hfrs 447 @ $106.75 Jonni Cinnamon blk-strs 572 @ $105.50 Marvin Petru mix-hfrs 476 @ $106.00 Don Brakhage mix-strs 622 @ $97.00 Wayne Foster blk-hfrs 530 @ $99.50 Krause & Assoc blk-strs 673 @ $93.75 Eric Lamle blk-hfrs 540 @ $95.50 David Burns herf-strs 713 @ $91.30 Tommy Brandt mix-hfrs 555 @ $92.50 James Matousek blk-strs 745 @ $89.00 Charles Peters mix-hfrs 597 @ $90.00 Jim Blaser mix-strs 764 @ $86.85 David Burns herf-hfrs 618 @ $89.50 Bill Steinert blk-strs 788 @ $85.90 Wilferd Toews blk-hfrs 662 @ $87.50 Galyn Bocox mix-strs 840 @ $85.25 McNaughton mix-hfrs 710 @ $83.50 Les Glazier blk-strs 875 @ $81.30 Duard Spleth mix-hfrs 738 @ $82.00 Doyle Jones mix-strs 922 @ $81.25 Raymond Parrish blk-hfrs 771 @ $81.75 Ernest Matousek mix-strs 979 @ $78.90 Don Eiffert blk-hfrs 762 @ $81.00

Enid, OK: Market Report for February 10, 2004

BULLISH!
Regardless of the difference between now and November, we are in the midst of a great time in the cattle industry. We have sold fat cattle for $113.00 a pound! Our national cowherd is the smallest since 1959; the southern and northern plains have decreased their cow numbers by possibly up to 400,000 head! This year’s calf crop is estimated to be 1% below last year, which it has done for the last several years. The availability of yearling cattle is probably as low as has been seen in years. Wheat pasture areas do not have near the numbers they could. Carcass weights have been 10 to 25 lbs lower for the last couple months. The on feed report showed roughly 6% more cattle on feed, but 2/3rds of that were calves! What more do we want?
I’m hoping that lots of people who sold their cattle this fall put the checks or receipts in a picture frame! I would sure bet that over the years, more cattle have been sold below 70.00 than above 80.00, let alone above 105.00! Less than 10 years ago, 450 lb steer calves were bringing 75 cents a pound with some heifer calves in the 50’s! That was when corn cost 4.00 to 6.00 a bushel. Let’s be thankful for the blessings we have! It’s a GOOD market!
The mad cow deal, national id, signing feed affidavits—these are all things weighing on the market right now. Aren’t we glad it didn’t happen with large cowherds, excessive carcass weights and $5.00 corn? I think when it comes right down to it; the biggest factors in our industry are supply, demand, and Mother Nature! Let’s don’t let the government, news media, or big corporations tell us otherwise!
Bring your cattle to the auction! Years of records have proven that cattle at the auction, especially here in the central U.S., bring a premium over the board. Winter Livestock is here to help you do that! 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year! Let us help you make the most on your cattle!
Light runs again this week. Thank You for the moisture, wherever it falls! Here in Enid this week:
