Enid, OK: Market Report for January 24, 2006

HOWDY!

Why is a 500 pound steer calf worth $700.00 and a bred cow only worth $800.00? It seems like there is something not quite right with that picture. There are plenty of young, fancy cows bringing $1200.00 or more, but there is a bigger share of the middle aged and older cows only bringing $600.00 to $1000.00! With pastures short and dry, why not buy two for the price of one? The first calf might pay for the cow!

If we are all so worried about the future, then why not run cows? They cost the same as a calf or yearling, they don’t need to be weaned, and they don’t have to have the high dollar vaccinations or high priced feed! In today’s market, more and more banks are requiring their customers to contract their calves before they even buy them! How is that helping? Why do we want to fence ourselves in?

The future looks very bright if you follow the futures board. All of the feeder cattle contracts are within $1.50 of each other all the way to August! That sure makes $3.00 wheat look pretty good as a feed source. Even as dry as it is, the wheat pasture around here is great! There are acres and acres of wheat that would be excellent as pasture. At $1.12 a pound for cattle or $0.60 a pound for wheat, which is worth more per acre?

We will be having our monthly cow sale next week on Tuesday, January 31, 2006! This will be in conjunction with our regular Tuesday sale. Our special cow sales are on the last Tuesday of every month! We’re looking forward to several hundred bred heifers, cows and pairs next week!

We sold about 1200 cattle this week in a steady to weak market. Calves were selling from $120.00 to $145.00, with yearlings bringing $105.00 to $120.00 and feeders up to $108.00. Butcher cows bringing $40.00 to $50.00, with bulls up to $67.00. The market is still great, even though it’s lower than it was. The big feeders are starting to see a decline, especially with the difference in the April and June live contracts. However, we should all remember how many cattle we have sold in our lives for under $70.00, and the fact that they are bringing $100.00 today!!

Don’t forget to watch the sale every week right over the internet! This is a fantastic tool to utilize! You can buy or sell cattle right from your computer, and see the action as it happens! Just visit www.winterlivestock.com to see it!

Enid, OK: Market Report for January 17, 2006

What a great market we have! The last several years we have seen a tremendous market in the cattle industry, even the futures board has seen record highs! We all wonder how it can go on, but the fact is, the market is still going strong. It’s something to think about that the futures contracts for feeder cattle are all within $1.00 of each other for almost every contract, right now around $112.00. That’s five dollars off the highs, but still a very good expectation!

The moisture situation is very serious. When you say dry in southern New Mexico, it’s a whole different ball game than being dry in southern Oklahoma! There might be a difference of 30 inches in rainfall! When you consider how much more vegetation there is, that is a huge difference!

Almost 100% of cattleman in Oklahoma are talking about how much water the cattle are drinking! The water content of the wheat is way below normal, and cattle are having to drink more to get their fill. This makes for better pasture, but might mean hauling a lot of water. We’ve had several cattle gain over 3 pounds a day here in Oklahoma!

Of course, there are lots of cattle going either to grow yards or feed yards now because of the moisture situation, but that will be good in the long run. There will be less cattle available come March, and supply and demand will be operating at full bore. Some of the light cattle coming off wheat at the auctions are bringing just as much as they did when they first got turned out, and 100 pounds bigger! Sure nothing wrong with that!

Excellent market here in Enid this week! Stocker cattle look higher, with feeder cattle selling steady to weak. Butcher cows and bulls about $1.00 higher, with bred cows selling very well for the kind offered.

Enid, OK: Market Report for January 10, 2006

Welcome to 2006! The year has started out on a great note, with calves and feeders selling about steady and fat cattle looking stronger! The second week of the year came out swinging, with literally thousands of cattle going to the auctions. It will be very interesting to see how many cattle actually moved this week.

It will also be interesting to see how the cattle have actually done on the wheat. Even though the wheat looks short in most places, it is not washy, and there has been more than a handful of people say that their cattle gained three pounds a day this fall. Conditions this year are just great for gains, and the cattle seem to be proving it.

We saw a lot of big 800 to 1000 lb cattle selling this week for excellent money. The cattle seem to be carrying fairly good flesh also, which would indicate they have been doing well. This might be a good year to sell the big cattle early instead of waiting until March. As of Tuesday, lots of these 900 to 1000 lb cattle bringing well over $100.00! What’s wrong with selling cattle at those prices?

Here in Enid this week, we had several good loads of home raised cattle weighing from 700 to 950 lbs, and all of them selling extremely well. The lighter stocker cattle are not as readily available, but still bringing great money! We’re looking forward to a nice selection of cattle over the next month or two.

This might be a good year to look at the futures board pretty closely. As of Tuesday, all of the feeder contracts, from January to August, were quoted somewhere around $114.00. That’s definitely something we don’t see every year! We’ll certainly hope they will be worth that every month, but let’s not forget to take advantage of it!

Please remember to mark your calendars for Thursday, January 19th! Winter Livestock will be having our first monthly video auction. There should be an excellent selection of calves, yearlings, and breeding stock for that sale! Also, don’t forget that you can buy your cattle live over the internet every week at Winter Livestock! Call any of our offices to find out how!

We really appreciate all the business we’ve had over the last 70 years, and we certainly are grateful for the chance to work for you here in Enid! If we can be of any service, give us a call at 580-796-2150!

Thanks again,

Weston Winter

Enid, OK: Market Report for January 3, 2006

Happy New Year!!

We had a great market to start out the new year! Very good attendance and excellent demand for a nice selection of calves and yearlings, made for a good market! Light weight calves up to $160.00, four and five weight steers bringing $120.00 to $140.00, with stocker steers up to $125.00 and yearling steers up to $119.00. Butcher cows were about steady with the end of last year with bred cows ranging from $600.00 to $1100.00.

The year 2006 looks like it will be and exciting year in the cattle business! The futures board for feeders are all sitting around $114.00 for the next several contracts, while fat cattle are trading above $90.00. It appears like there is great demand and anticipation for the coming year.

There will be lots of issues to cover this year also. The wheat and corn crops, with the vast area of dry weather, will be a big concern. Also, and probably more important, are the big areas of Oklahoma and Texas, which are normally very good grazing areas, that are in a big drought and getting a lot of grass fires. It will make for excellent pastures when it rains, but it’s certainly not fun right now.

The eastern markets are supposedly opening up now for American beef. That will be nice, but with a market like we have, who needs them? With several of those areas banning our beef, we’ve had the best cattle market in history! So, why is there such a big push for source verification, national ID, and all that jazz? We’ve had brands for over 150 years to identify cattle, if they want to verify where the cattle came from, look at the receipts!

The information and technology that are now available to all of us are excellent tools for every cattle man to use. It seems that all the hoopla over identification and verification is nothing more than good husbandry and bookkeeping! We should all use the tools available to us in order to make our cattle business better, but I think we should be able to use the tools the way we want to, not the way the packers, retailers or foreigners tell us to.
